According to a CCTV Finance report on July 14th, Beijing’s traffic management department, in conjunction with the municipal civilization office and other departments, has launched a special campaign across the city to address uncivilized behaviors by non-motorized vehicle riders.
The report indicates that enforcement officers are strengthening on-site inspections to check for illegal additions or modifications to the lighting systems of electric bicycles.
Traffic police explained that for vehicles found in violation for the first time, riders will receive a warning and be instructed to immediately remove any added lighting or restore it to the original factory specifications. For repeat offenders, the vehicle will be impounded, and riders will be fined between 500 and 1000 yuan for operating a modified electric bicycle on the road.
This action by Beijing traffic police has sparked widespread discussion online. Many netizens express strong support, sharing their frustrating experiences with blinding lights from electric bicycles at night. One common sentiment is the stark contrast between cautious car drivers who dim their high beams when meeting oncoming traffic, and electric bicycle riders who often use their high beams continuously, making nighttime travel more difficult and even more disruptive than car headlights.
Further adding to the criticism, some users pointed out that due to cost considerations, many electric bicycles are manufactured without proper projector lenses for their headlights. Consequently, when high beams are activated, the light scatters broadly, rendering it almost impossible for oncoming riders or drivers to see clearly. This lack of considerate design exacerbates the problem, turning a convenience into a significant safety hazard.
Many drivers expressed their long-standing frustration with the pervasive issue of overly bright electric bicycle lights, with a widespread hope that this initiative will be replicated nationwide. The call for broader implementation reflects a shared desire for improved road safety and a more considerate riding environment for all road users.
