Global GPU giant NVIDIA recently announced that two prominent Chinese AI experts, Banghua Zhu and Jiantao Jiao, have officially joined the company. NVIDIA founder and CEO Huang Renxun personally confirmed the news, signaling that the company will be launching a stronger R&D effort in the AI space.
Among other things, Zhu Banghua will serve as NVIDIA’s chief research scientist. While Qiao Niu’s exact position has not been formally announced, his reputation in academia and the appropriateness of his research has attracted attention from the industry. The arrival of Chinese scholars with educational backgrounds and extensive research experience at top universities will undoubtedly breathe new life into NVIDIA’s AI strategy.
Let’s take a look at Zhu Banghua, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Washington, focusing on related areas of research. He has had an outstanding academic career, graduating from Tsinghua University with a degree in electrical and electronic engineering and then earning a Ph. D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Berkeley. In addition to his academic research, Zhu Banghua gained valuable industrial experience through internships at Google and Microsoft. This not only gave him a deep theoretical foundation, but also applied the theory to practice.
Jao Jiantao is also a leader in academia. He is a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley. His research directives cover many popular areas such as generative AI, fundamental models, privacy and security in machine learning. Similar to Zhu Banghua, Ruo Jiantao graduated from Tsinghua University and later earned his Ph. D. from Stanford University. Jiao Jiantao’s findings are highly recognized in academia, and his involvement will help NVIDIA make breakthroughs in many border AI areas.
More notably, two scholars, Zhu Banghua and Jiao Jiantao, were classmates at Tsinghua University during their undergraduate studies. Now they will join forces to work together again for Nvidia. It is understood that Zhu Banghua will join NVIDIA’s stellar Nemotron team, focusing on applied research on enterprise AI agents. This means that NVIDIA is aggressively deploying the enterprise AI solutions market and the addition of Zhu Banghua will accelerate this process. The Star Nemotron team focuses on building enterprise AI agents using inference and multimodal fundamental models. It is one of NVIDIA’s key layouts in the AI space, aiming to provide smarter, more effective AI solutions for enterprises.
