NVIDIA has officially extended the availability of its Smooth Motion technology, initially launched alongside the RTX 50 series graphics cards, to users of the RTX 40 series. This advancement aims to significantly enhance gaming performance by intelligently interpolating frames.
This new feature is quite comparable to AMD’s Fluid Motion Frames. It functions by generating an intermediate frame between two existing frames, utilizing AI, which in turn boosts the overall frame rate of games. A key advantage of Smooth Motion is its independence from developer integration, unlike technologies such as DLSS or FSR. This means it can be applied to virtually any game, regardless of whether the game natively supports frame generation or upscaling technologies.
Initially, Smooth Motion was exclusively available for the higher-end RTX 50 series. Given the already formidable performance of these cards, the practical impact of this feature on that specific tier was arguably less pronounced. However, its expansion represents a substantial upgrade for a broader segment of NVIDIA’s user base.
Fortunately, a recent driver update has finally brought Smooth Motion to eligible RTX 40 series graphics cards. The latest 590.26 preview driver allows users to enable this feature on their RTX 40 series hardware.
It is important to note that since this is a preview driver, users cannot currently find a direct toggle for Smooth Motion within the standard NVIDIA control panel interface. Instead, activation requires the use of NVIDIA Profile Inspector.
Real-world testing has demonstrated the effectiveness of this technology. For instance, in “World of Warcraft,” the feature has been observed to more than double frame rates, pushing them from 82 FPS to 164 FPS, without introducing any noticeable additional latency. Similar significant frame rate improvements have been reported across a variety of other games, indicating broad applicability and a positive impact on gaming fluidity.
To access this functionality, users need to download the preview driver from NVIDIA’s developer portal, which requires a developer account. Following the driver installation, the NVIDIA Profile Inspector utility must be downloaded separately from GitHub.
This development is particularly beneficial for older titles that might not have received updates to support modern upscaling or frame generation technologies. Smooth Motion now offers these games a path to enhanced performance and a smoother visual experience, all without the need for third-party modifications.
