Beijing, August 4th – The Beijing Meteorological Observatory has issued a red alert for heavy rainfall, effective from 13:00 on August 4th, 2025. This upgrade signifies an exceptionally severe weather warning for the capital.
According to forecasts, the city is expected to experience intense rainfall starting this afternoon. The most severe downpours are anticipated between 18:00 on August 4th and 05:00 on August 5th. During this period, some areas could receive over 150 millimeters of rain in a 6-hour span, with isolated locations potentially exceeding 200 millimeters. The risk of flash floods, mudslides, and landslides is extremely high in mountainous and shallow mountainous regions. Low-lying areas are also highly susceptible to waterlogging. Residents are strongly advised to take all necessary precautions.
The public is urged to refrain from non-essential outdoor activities. In case of emergencies, individuals should immediately contact the police at 110 or the fire department at 119. Businesses and institutions are advised to suspend non-essential operations and allow employees to work remotely, with exceptions for essential city services and public welfare operations.
Access to mountainous areas, waterside attractions, parks, and forest farms is prohibited. Residents living in low-lying areas, such as traditional courtyard houses (hutongs), ground-floor apartments, and basements, should closely monitor the risk of flooding and evacuate promptly if necessary. Individuals in areas threatened by potential disasters are required to comply with any evacuation orders issued by authorities.
Roads are expected to be slippery and visibility reduced during the downpour. If travel is unavoidable, please exercise extreme caution and adhere to traffic safety regulations. Heavy rainfall may lead to significant water accumulation in low-lying areas and certain road sections; it is crucial to avoid driving through flooded areas. Parking in low-lying zones and under underpasses should also be avoided to ensure personal safety.
The heavy rainfall may be accompanied by lightning and strong gusts of wind in some areas. It is important to seek shelter and avoid staying in open spaces near tall buildings, billboards, temporary structures, or large trees during the storm.
