According to information from tech blogger “数码闲聊站” on August 9th, OPPO, vivo, and Xiaomi are also expected to adopt dual-layer OLED screens soon.
Currently, dual-layer OLED technology has been implemented in models from Apple, Huawei, and Honor. Specifically, Apple utilizes this technology in its iPad Pro lineup, while Huawei and Honor have integrated it into their flagship smartphones.
Dual-layer OLED, also known as “Tandem OLED,” enhances traditional single-layer OLED by adding an extra emissive layer. This architectural change allows the light-emitting demands to be distributed across two layers instead of one. Consequently, the electric field strength on each emissive layer is significantly reduced, which in turn slows down the degradation of the light-emitting materials.
Furthermore, because the two emissive layers are connected in series for display, the theoretical brightness of dual-layer OLED can reach twice that of single-layer OLED. This offers users a visibly brighter display experience. It also addresses the “light leakage” issue often associated with single-layer OLED displays while retaining the inherent flexibility of OLED screen technology.
It is important to note that due to the considerably higher manufacturing costs associated with dual-layer OLED technology, it is highly probable that major brands will reserve this advanced display feature exclusively for their high-end flagship models. It’s possible only the “ultra-premium” or “Pro Max” variants of devices will feature this cutting-edge screen technology.
