On September 30th, according to media reports, the successful completion of T-girder removal and replacement construction for seven bridges along the section of the Jing-Tong Railway between Changping and Chaoyang has been announced. This critical step was marked by a freight train smoothly traversing this segment at a speed of 45 kilometers per hour. This significant achievement is part of the broader electrification renovation of the Jing-Tong Railway, undertaken by China Railway No. 22 Bureau Group.

The project encompassed a 59.14-kilometer stretch of the Shenyang Railway Bureau’s section. Over an intensive 18-day period, construction crews managed to dismantle and replace a total of 121 spans, comprising 242 concrete T-girders. This monumental effort not only signifies a major advancement in infrastructure but also lays the essential groundwork for future enhancements in train speeds across the entire railway line.

The Jing-Tong Railway, originally constructed in 1972, spans 804 kilometers and is a vital artery connecting regions both inside and outside of Shanhaiguan. According to Jiang Yuelong, the project manager for the Jing-Tong Railway at China Railway No. 22 Bureau Group, the aging condition of numerous bridges along the route had previously necessitated speed restrictions to under 60 kilometers per hour for trains. This limitation also led to a significant reduction in operational train pairs, from a peak of 168 pairs daily to a mere 44. Consequently, this railway line had become a considerable bottleneck, hindering the economic development of both the North China and Northeast China regions.

Li Guangwei, the chief engineer for the project, stated that the scale of this recent replacement operation, covering 59.14 kilometers and involving 121 spans across 7 bridges, surpassed the previous record set by the western section of the Jing-Tong Railway in 2019. The project was meticulously planned and executed across four construction zones and seven work fronts, operating simultaneously. This approach, while challenging due to dispersed work sites, a long organizational chain, and the complexity of coordination, was essential for efficient progress.

To navigate these intricate construction conditions, the project team employed advanced techniques, including modularized work units and dynamic BIM (Building Information Modeling) simulation. This allowed for a comprehensive visual simulation of the entire process, from dismantling old girders and transporting new ones to precise installation. Through 3D modeling, the team was able to accurately forecast and manage the sequencing of tasks, thereby ensuring both high-quality construction and adherence to the schedule.

Industry experts note that upon the completion of the Jing-Tong Railway’s electrification, traction will transition from diesel locomotives to electric power. Specifically, in the Changping to Chaoyang section, train speeds will increase from the current 60 kilometers per hour to 80 kilometers per hour. This upgrade is projected to boost overall freight capacity from 35 million tons to 39.4 million tons annually. Furthermore, passenger train services are expected to increase from 8 pairs per day to 16 pairs per day. Such improvements are anticipated to significantly enhance the flow of goods and the movement of people between Northeast and North China, providing crucial support for the revitalization of the Northeast, the development of Eastern Inner Mongolia, and the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. In addition to these economic benefits, the electrification will also contribute to environmental sustainability by saving approximately 3521 liters of diesel fuel daily and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by around 2680 kilograms per day.
