On October 11th, a netizen reported a peculiar experience on a popular Chinese technology forum. While trying to register for NetEase Cloud Music with a newly acquired mobile number, they unexpectedly logged into the account of the late singer CoCo Lee after receiving the verification code. Upon accessing the account, the user discovered they could view messages from fans expressing their condolences and remembrance.
Following this revelation, NetEase Cloud Music customer service confirmed that such a situation could indeed occur.
The primary reason for this account “inheritance,” as explained by customer service, is when the previous account holder relinquishes their mobile number without properly unbinding it from their NetEase Cloud Music account. Once the mobile carrier reclaims and resells the number, a new user obtaining it may inadvertently gain access to the old account.
Customer service stated that further investigation would be conducted to clarify the specific details of this case.
Notably, on the afternoon of October 11th, the netizen who posted the original complaint updated their post, stating, “NetEase Cloud Music’s official team has already called to inform me that the account has been unbound.” This suggests a swift resolution was reached.
It is important to recall that on July 5th, 2023, CoCo Lee’s sister, Nancy Lee, announced the passing of the renowned singer due to depression. Tragically, CoCo Lee passed away at the age of 48 after reportedly attempting suicide at home on July 2nd. Her death was later confirmed by Warner Music.
