According to Maoyan Movie, the film “The Girl,” written and directed by Shu Qi, released its official poster today, announcing its nationwide release on November 1st.
Set against the backdrop of Keelung Port in 1988, “The Girl” tells the coming-of-age story of a young girl named Lin Xiaoli. Despite facing a mother who often takes her frustrations out on her and an abusive, alcoholic father, she harbors dreams of a brighter future.
During its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Shu Qi expressed the significant pressure she felt as a director, stating, “This is my first directorial work, and it’s the first time I’m meeting everyone as a director. I’m afraid I won’t be able to do a good job.”
Previously, “The Girl” was selected for the main competition section of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival. Shu Qi also garnered the Best Director award at the 30th Busan International Film Festival for her work on this film.
Publicly available information indicates that Shu Qi, born on April 16, 1976, in Xindian District, New Taipei City, Taiwan Province, China, is a Hong Kong-based Chinese actress, model, singer, and director. She has starred in notable films such as “If You Are the One,” “Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons,” and “The Assassin.”
The released film poster features a cast-focused design. Ethan Juan takes on the challenging role of the father, a character rife with violent tendencies. Singer Yung-Chi Yu (9m88) makes her big-screen debut as the mother. Emerging talent Bai Xiaoqi portrays the young Lin Xiaoli, and Golden Horse Award-winning youngest Best Actress, Hung Pui-Tung, plays Xiaoli’s close friend, Li Lili.
Another poster depicts the Keelung Zhongshan Bridge, a prominent location from Shu Qi’s mentor Hou Hsiao-hsien’s film “Millennium Mambo,” serving as a visual tribute to the acclaimed director.
The slogan, “Thank you for growing up bravely,” is a message Shu Qi addresses to her younger self and, by extension, to all girls.
