FastTechnology, July 27th: Following the release of its second-quarter financial report, Tesla has seen a double-digit decline in both revenue and net profit, amidst a backdrop of continuously falling sales.
In an effort to bolster performance expectations, Tesla’s CFO revealed that production of a “more affordable new Tesla model” has commenced on the Model 3/Y production lines in the first half of this year, with mass production anticipated in the latter half. CEO Elon Musk has also confirmed that this new vehicle is likely to be a more budget-friendly variant of the Model Y.
Today, some bloggers have captured sightings of a camouflaged “affordable Model Y.” While the vehicle is thoroughly wrapped in black cloth, several details have still been discernible.
Upon closer inspection, the affordable Model Y shares a similar overall profile with the standard Model Y, though its body length appears to be reduced.
The new model also features a departure from the integrated taillight bar at the rear. The taillights have been redesigned with a split configuration, and the diffuse reflection taillight design has been omitted.
The most significant changes observed inside the cabin include a split central console, which sacrifices some storage space. The screen located above the rear air vents has been removed, and the legroom in the rear appears to be noticeably reduced.
The A-pillars in the cabin now lack tweeters, and the panoramic glass roof has been replaced with a conventional metal roof, without the inclusion of a sunroof. Furthermore, the side bolsters of the vehicle’s seats have been changed from leather to fabric material.
Overall, while the exterior design of Tesla’s affordable Model Y has not undergone substantial alterations, the reduction and omission of several features throughout the vehicle are clearly aimed at significantly lowering production costs. This strategy is a common approach in the automotive industry to make vehicles more accessible to a wider market segment, particularly in markets where price sensitivity is a key purchasing factor.
Currently, the Tesla Model Y is priced from 263,500 RMB in China. Do you believe the affordable Model Y could enter the market priced under 200,000 RMB?
