In response to the demanding lives of truck drivers who often spend their lives on the road, relying on transit for meals and rest, national efforts are underway to improve their living conditions.
According to CCTV reports, the Ministry of Transport and the All-China Federation of Trade Unions are collaborating to establish and upgrade 1,000 standardized “Driver Homes” at highway service areas. These facilities are designed to offer essential services free of charge, along with optional supplementary amenities for truck drivers.
The initiative prioritizes key logistics corridors, selecting highway service areas that experience a daily average of over 300 truck traffic to implement these upgrades.
The first batch of 100 upgraded “Driver Homes” have already been put into operation. Drivers can locate and utilize these facilities through navigation maps, online freight platforms, or dedicated “Driver Home” mini-programs, facilitating convenient access.
Each standardized “Driver Home” will feature distinct signage and prominent indicators at the service area entrance for easy identification.
These facilities are guaranteed to provide at least 20 parking spaces for trucks, two shower rooms, and two washing machines. They will operate 24 hours a day, with comprehensive, blind-spot-free surveillance in the parking areas to ensure safety.
Furthermore, five essential free services will be uniformly offered: parking and rest areas, hot water supply, food heating, shower facilities, and laundry services. This initiative aims to provide a comfortable and supportive environment for drivers during their long journeys, embodying a sense of home away from home.
In addition to these core services, some “Driver Homes” will also offer subsidized meals, vehicle maintenance, emergency roadside assistance, and administrative support, all contributing to the goal of making drivers feel truly welcomed and cared for on the road.
For instance, Sichuan Province has introduced a meal set priced at 10 yuan that includes one meat dish and two vegetable dishes with soup, while Chongqing offers unlimited Chongqing noodles for 9.9 yuan. These efforts are focused on ensuring that truck drivers can eat affordably and heartily.
