American Billionaire Killed in African Buffalo Hunt Gone Wrong

A professional hunting team, comprising a seasoned hunter, an animal tracker, and a wealthy tourist with extensive experience hunting large game, was recently outmatched by an African buffalo. All members of the team were armed.

Despite the team’s apparent advantage, they were severely challenged by a powerful African buffalo weighing approximately 1.3 tons last week.

The tourist, 52-year-old American rancher Asher Watkins, who is a millionaire, was fatally gored by the enraged buffalo. The animal charged directly at him, resulting in his immediate death.

The hunting expedition was reportedly organized by “Coenraad Vermaak Safaris.” Watkins, participating as a tourist, paid £7,500 for the experience, while the other two individuals were employees of the safari company.

Although a tourist, Watkins was an experienced hunter.

Growing up on a ranch in Texas, he learned to shoot from a young age and frequently participated in hunting activities throughout his life.

He often showcased his hunting trophies on social media, which included animals like cougars, deer, and various game birds.

Furthermore, he once boasted online about participating in a hunt with seven friends in Argentina where they killed thousands of pigeons in just three days.

Contrary to common perceptions, Watkins was a strong proponent of hunting, believing it to be a crucial element in wildlife conservation.

As a result of his financial freedom and passion for hunting, he was a regular client of this safari company. Last weekend, he was on a hunting trip with his family, a group of four.

On the first day of the trip, he successfully hunted a bushbuck. On the second day, the day of the incident, the trio was tracking an African buffalo. Unexpectedly, the buffalo, without being provoked or injured, became enraged and launched an attack.

Instead of fleeing, the buffalo charged directly at Watkins at a speed of approximately 35 miles per hour (about 56 kilometers per hour). Watkins was unable to react in time and was fatally trampled.

Following the incident, the head of “Coenraad Vermaak Safaris” promptly announced Watkins’ death online, expressing their condolences and sympathy for the deceased.

Concurrently, citing safety concerns, the company issued a warning to potential hunters on their platforms: it is imperative to acknowledge and respect the significant and often underestimated danger posed by African buffalo.

The African buffalo, often underestimated, is a formidable creature. While sharing the name “buffalo” with other species, the African buffalo is particularly renowned for its unpredictable and aggressive nature.

It is recognized as one of the “Big Five” animals in Africa, a designation shared with lions, African elephants, leopards, and rhinoceroses. Its temperament is so volatile that it remains untamed by humans to this day.

Furthermore, its substantial size, with weights reaching up to 1.5 tons, and its formidable natural weaponry – a pair of horns that can exceed one meter in length – make it a highly dangerous animal.

This means that when provoked to attack, coupled with its astonishing speed, even an armed human would struggle to defend against its charge.

African buffaloes are also known for their cunning and unpredictable behavior, with a strong propensity for retaliation.

In dangerous situations, they may retreat into dense vegetation, but this is often a prelude to a surprise counter-attack, catching their pursuers off guard.

Given these factors, the African buffalo has consistently been regarded as one of Africa’s most perilous animals.

However, the challenge and danger associated with hunting such formidable prey often make it a more coveted trophy for hunters.

The African buffalo has become a highly sought-after trophy, with some hunters willing to spend over $10,000 for the chance to hunt one.

Tragically, the risks involved are starkly illustrated by a history of fatal encounters. In Africa, buffaloes are responsible for a greater number of hunter fatalities than other animals within the “Big Five.”

In 2022, a hunter named Benjamin, aged 50, was killed in Limpopo Province, South Africa, when a buffalo, undeterred by his shots, fiercely attacked him, ultimately spearing him with its horns.

In 2018, South African professional hunter Claude and his team were attacked by another buffalo just as they were loading a carcass onto their truck. Claude was also killed by a buffalo’s horns.

Numerous similar incidents underscore the danger. While lions are considered the primary natural predators of African buffaloes alongside humans, historical accounts suggest this hierarchy is not as absolute as it might seem.

A significant number of hunters have been injured or killed by buffaloes. Even lions, Africa’s apex predators, approach buffalo hunts with extreme caution. Unlucky lions can be gored, trampled, or even thrown by buffaloes, and in some instances, are even chased by herds.

These observations highlight the formidable power of the African buffalo and serve as a crucial reminder for humans, particularly hunters, to approach these animals with profound respect and caution.
