Sony has released its latest PS5 sales figures in its first-quarter earnings report for fiscal year 2025. The company shipped 2.5 million PS5 units in the first quarter, bringing the total shipments of the PS5 to 80.3 million units.
Concurrently, the monthly active user base grew to 123 million from 116 million in the previous quarter, marking a 6% increase quarter-over-quarter. This growth in active users suggests continued engagement with the PlayStation ecosystem, even as hardware sales progress.
However, despite these substantial numbers, the PS5 has not managed to outsell its predecessor, the PS4, during the same period in their respective life cycles. An objective analysis reveals that in the first 19 quarters since its launch, the PS4, including the PS4 Pro, had already shipped 82.4 million units. In contrast, the PS5, including any potential PS5 Pro variants, has reached 80.3 million units in the same timeframe. This indicates a slight lag for the PS5 in terms of pure hardware unit sales when directly compared to the PS4’s early performance.
Furthermore, Sony’s financial reports indicate a positive trend in profitability, with PlayStation’s profits soaring by 127%. The total software sales within the platform reached 65.9 million units, a notable 23% year-over-year increase. This strong software performance is a crucial indicator of the ecosystem’s health and player investment in games, even if hardware unit sales show a slight divergence from the PS4’s pace.
As the PS5 enters the latter half of its lifecycle, significant surges in its sales trajectory are less likely. This is particularly true as players begin to anticipate the next generation of consoles. The PlayStation 6 is widely expected to be launched around 2027. Industry observers anticipate that the PS6 will offer full backward compatibility with both PS4 and PS5 games, a crucial feature for maintaining user loyalty and a smooth transition for existing players. Additionally, there are ongoing rumors suggesting Sony might also release a handheld PlayStation 6 device concurrently with the main console, a move that could further diversify their market offerings.
