According to an August 9th report from Kuaikeji, blogger “Digital Chat Station” stated that Apple is planning to implement under-display camera technology. Both domestic under-display front-facing cameras and under-display 3D facial recognition have entered the laboratory phase for testing. The project is currently in the research and development stage, and if testing proceeds smoothly, it is highly likely to be implemented in flagship models.
“Digital Chat Station” further elaborated that manufacturers are currently in the testing phase of relevant technologies. The fastest progress in commercialization will be synchronized with Apple. This suggests that domestic under-display front-facing cameras and under-display 3D facial recognition will not be launched before Apple.
Previously, the same blogger had hinted that although Xiaomi has not launched a mass-produced model with an under-display front camera, the related technology has been continuously iterated and has reached the highest industry standards. It is expected to be mass-produced and released at an appropriate time.
Back in 2021, the Xiaomi MIX 4 ushered in the era of true full screens, becoming one of the first brands in the industry to commercialize under-display camera technology.
The Xiaomi MIX 4’s CUP (Camera Under Panel) full screen hides the front camera under the display panel. It achieves this by rearranging the circuit layout through micro-drilling and using transparent wires to increase screen transparency. It also boasts 100% full pixel display and a precision of 400 PPI.
However, after the MIX 4, Xiaomi has not released any further models with under-display cameras. Currently, Nubia is the brand that persists in developing under-display front-facing cameras. It is anticipated that following Apple’s commercialization of under-display Face ID, domestic brands will gradually adopt under-display solutions, making true full screens an exciting prospect.
