As reported by media on August 14th, a notable case has emerged from a hospital in Fujian province. A 28-year-old woman, Ms. Lin, prompted by widespread online advice from netizens, sought medical attention overnight for concerns regarding a wound on her knee.
The situation began on the evening of August 12th when Ms. Lin posted a video on a short-video platform seeking help. She described a roughly 5-centimeter wound on her knee that had scabbed over. However, she observed fine, white, fibrous material covering the surface of the scab, with some areas appearing fluffy. She expressed her worry about a potential infection, stating, “I didn’t take it seriously after falling. Is this an infection?” In the video, she gently touched the white substance with a cotton swab, causing it to tremble. Within two hours of its release, the 15-second video garnered over 30,000 comments.
By 1:00 AM, Ms. Lin’s account was flooded with private messages. Among these, 17 individuals, who identified themselves as medical professionals or to have had similar experiences, earnestly advised her to seek immediate medical evaluation, offering professional analysis and personal anecdotes.
Following several hours of continuous encouragement and advice from netizens, Ms. Lin proceeded to the emergency department of a nearby hospital that very night. After a thorough examination by doctors, it was confirmed that the wound was healing well internally and did not require debridement.
Regarding the white substance she was concerned about, the doctor explained that it was not a fungal infection or mold. Instead, it was a normal phenomenon resulting from the mixture of fibrin, a protein involved in blood clotting, and dead cells during the wound healing process. This is a natural part of the body’s repair mechanism, where the fibrin network traps cellular debris and helps in the formation of a new tissue scaffold. The appearance can sometimes be mistaken for something more serious if not understood in the context of normal physiological responses.
Afterward, Ms. Lin recorded a video to express her gratitude to the helpful netizens. She stated, “Although it turned out to be a false alarm, I am deeply touched by the concern shown by so many strangers! I will pay more attention to wound care in the future and remind everyone to seek professional medical advice promptly if they encounter similar situations.” This incident highlights the double-edged sword of social media: while misinformation can spread rapidly, it can also serve as a platform for community support and rapid dissemination of helpful advice, sometimes even prompting timely medical intervention.
