According to a report released by Yiche, the registration data for private cars in Hong Kong for July and January-July 2025 has been published. The findings indicate a significant shift in the Hong Kong automotive market, with Chinese domestic brands making substantial inroads.
Notably, in the Top 20 first registrations for private car brands from January to July this year, domestic Chinese brands secured five positions within the top ten. This signifies a strong presence, effectively capturing half of the leading market segment.
BYD has emerged as the top-selling brand in Hong Kong this year, with 5,556 units sold in the first seven months. This performance comfortably surpasses rivals like Tesla and Toyota, with BYD commanding a market share of 21.6%. This leadership position is particularly impressive given the historically strong presence of Japanese and European manufacturers in the territory.
Tesla and Toyota follow BYD, ranking second and third respectively, with market shares of 17.7% and 15.9%. Together, these three brands account for over half of the Hong Kong market share. The dominance of these leading brands underscores the growing consumer acceptance of electric vehicles and new energy sources in the region.
Brands such as Honda, BMW, Zeekr, XPeng, MG, Mercedes-Benz, and Denza occupy the fourth to tenth positions. The increasing influx of Chinese domestic brands into the Hong Kong market signals a competitive landscape where established players are facing new challenges. This trend suggests a broader shift in global automotive preferences and the growing competitiveness of Chinese-made vehicles on the international stage.
In terms of specific models, the BYD Song L EV (海狮07 EV) has taken the lead as the best-selling model for the first seven months of the year, with 4,155 units sold. This figure represents a significant gap over the Tesla Model 3, which sold 2,468 units, highlighting BYD’s strong performance in the EV segment.
The Tesla Model Y ranks third on the model list, with 2,099 units sold. All three top-ranking models have surpassed the 2,000-unit sales mark, indicating a strong demand for these particular electric vehicles.
The fourth to tenth positions in the model sales list are occupied by the Toyota Alphard, Zeekr 009, XPeng G6, Denza D9, Toyota Voxy, Toyota Vellfire, and Honda Freed. The presence of multiple models from Chinese brands like BYD, Zeekr, XPeng, and Denza in this list further reinforces the growing stature and appeal of Chinese automotive offerings in Hong Kong.
