Former Anti-Fraud Police Officer Exposes Potential Misleading Sales Practices in Livestreaming: The Case of “Gazi Ge” and Coolpad Phones
A recent public controversy has emerged involving a former anti-fraud police officer, known online as “Anti-Fraud Old Chen,” who has publicly questioned the authenticity of cell phones sold by another popular livestreamer, “Gazi Ge” (Xie Mengwei).
According to media reports, “Anti-Fraud Old Chen” stated in a video that a Coolpad phone priced at 699 yuan being sold in his livestream could not be found on the official Coolpad website. He directly addressed Coolpad’s official channels, demanding to know, “Do you actually have this product? If not, please inform the public so that others don’t impersonate the official brand to trick people!”
The customer service of the Coolpad Jingdong self-operated flagship store also explicitly stated that they do not have this product.
In response to “Anti-Fraud Old Chen’s” accusations, “Gazi Ge” Xie Mengwei strongly defended himself in a livestream, asserting that all products he sells are genuine.
Subsequently, Coolpad’s official customer service indicated that they have been receiving customer inquiries regarding this matter and have escalated the issue to senior management. A formal response was expected on August 25th.
“Anti-Fraud Old Chen” later released another video, reiterating his concerns and highlighting the lack of a response from Coolpad since his initial video on the 21st. He also shared that he has identified a future direction for his livestreams, emphasizing that serving the public with genuine work offers multiple avenues. He concluded with a powerful statement: “The ‘Anti-Fraud Old Chen’ of the past is back.”
However, astute netizens noticed that the Coolpad Douyin official flagship store had listed a “Coolpad X60” phone for 799 yuan, with 35 units sold at the time of observation. When questioned by netizens, the customer service responded by stating they hadn’t engaged him for influencer sales and were unaware of the product’s source, while still affirming that the listed product was an official genuine item.
