On August 27th, Nikon announced the release of firmware version 2.00 for its full-frame mirrorless digital camera, the Z6 III. This marks a significant update since the Z6 III’s initial launch, introducing a range of new features that bring it closer to the capabilities of Nikon’s flagship models, the Z9 and Z8.
A key highlight of this firmware update is the long-awaited bird subject detection mode, designed to enhance the photographic and videographic experience for users. When this mode is activated, the camera automatically and accurately tracks birds in flight. This improved subject detection excels even in challenging environments with high-contrast, complex backgrounds such as forests or rocky terrain, ensuring accurate focus and allowing photographers to concentrate on composition and capturing their desired shots.
Furthermore, users can now assign “Focus Limit Setting” to custom controls. This allows for the restriction of the focusing distance range, leading to more precise focusing on the intended subject matter.
Additionally, when using the pre-shooting function, users can now select “Fine” image quality for JPEGs. This feature, capable of recording up to approximately 1 second of imagery before the shutter is fully pressed during full-frame 60fps shooting, is particularly beneficial for capturing fleeting moments like a bird taking flight.
The Z6 firmware version 2.00 also introduces an “Auto Shooting” function, enabling automatic capture under preset conditions. Users can specify the type of subject, direction of movement, and focusing distance range, thereby making it possible to capture moments that were previously difficult to photograph effectively.
