According to a report by Kuaikeji on September 1st, a case of high-altitude littering was recently judged by the People’s Court of Wenling City, Taizhou, Zhejiang Province.
In May of this year, a woman, after consuming alcohol, engaged in a dispute with her sister over cleaning up dog feces in her home. In a fit of anger, she threw two pet dogs from her 21st-floor balcony. While this impulsive act did not result in any casualties, it did damage the iron trees within the residential compound.
Ultimately, the court sentenced the woman to four months of detention, suspended for eight months, and imposed a fine of 4,000 yuan for the crime of high-altitude littering.
From a physics perspective, when an object falls from a height, its velocity continuously increases due to gravitational acceleration. Consequently, the impact force and destructive power generated also escalate exponentially.
Although the two pet dogs were not heavy, falling from a height of 21 floors means that the impact force generated upon collision with the ground could cause severe damage to pedestrians, vehicles, or public facilities below.
High-altitude littering is by no means a trivial matter; its destructive potential is surprisingly immense. According to relevant data, an egg dropped from the 8th floor can fracture the scalp, a soda can thrown from the 15th floor can cause skull fractures, and a piece of watermelon rind dropped from the 25th floor is capable of causing death.
Seemingly insignificant everyday items, such as half a carton of milk or a bag of household waste, can transform into lethal “weapons” when falling from a great height, with their impact force exceeding their own weight by tens of times.
According to Article 291 of the Criminal Law of the People’s Republic of China, deliberately throwing objects from buildings or other high places, if the circumstances are serious, shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not more than one year, criminal detention, or public surveillance, and shall also be fined or given a separate fine.
