On September 2nd, according to news from Kuaikeji, some netizens reported that Shenzhen would completely ban supplementary teaching materials for students, causing anxiety among parents.
In response, the Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau released a “Statement on the Distribution of Supporting Teaching Materials in Compulsory Education Schools,” clarifying the situation.
According to higher-level requirements and established practice, supporting teaching materials for compulsory education in Shenzhen are selected, ordered, and distributed free of charge by each compulsory education school based on the principle of “one subject, one supplement.” These selections are made from the “Shenzhen Compulsory Education Free Supporting Teaching Materials and Teaching Resources Selection Catalog for the 2025-2026 Academic Year” and will be distributed sequentially starting from September 5th.
Experts suggest that a complete ban on supplementary teaching materials is neither practical nor necessary. Fundamentally, fostering students’ physical and mental well-being and all-round development requires society to alleviate anxiety and establish a comprehensive, student-centered evaluation system that moves beyond a sole focus on academic scores.
