On September 5th, according to reports, on September 2nd local time, a luxury yacht named Dolce Vento unexpectedly sank off the coast of Zonguldak in northern Turkey, just minutes after its delivery and launch.
Video footage from the scene shows the yacht being pushed by heavy machinery down a slipway before slowly sliding into the sea.
However, unexpectedly, within minutes of entering the water, the yacht began to list and capsized. The yacht ultimately sank approximately 15 minutes after its launch.
The Dolce Vento is reported to be approximately 85 feet long and was constructed by Med Yilmaz Shipyard at a cost of around $940,000 USD.
Following the capsize incident, all individuals on board immediately jumped into the water and swam towards the shore to escape. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.
This incident has garnered significant public attention. Some engineers have suggested that a potential contributing factor to the sinking could be an imbalance in the yacht’s center of gravity, possibly due to an overly heavy bow. Other possibilities include issues with waterproofing or incomplete assembly during the construction process, any of which could lead to such a catastrophic failure.
As one engineer pointed out, “A minor engineering error during the manufacturing process itself might not directly cause a sinking, but when various factors are compounded, the consequences can be extremely severe.” This highlights the complex interplay of design, construction, and environmental factors in maritime safety.
