According to Kuai Keji on September 7, a significant development has emerged regarding Microsoft’s email client: Outlook Lite is slated for discontinuation. As its name suggests, Outlook Lite was designed as a streamlined, lightweight version of the popular Outlook application.
Upon its initial release, Outlook Lite boasted a mere 5MB footprint, though this has since grown to approximately 7.5MB. This compact size was a key selling point, promising “fast performance, low power consumption, and stable operation across all networks.”
The application has achieved notable success since its launch, surpassing five million downloads by the end of November 2023. Impressively, this figure doubled to over ten million downloads in less than a year by August 2024, indicating a substantial user base. However, for these users, Microsoft has delivered unwelcome news: Outlook Lite will be phased out, with the discontinuation process commencing on October 6, 2025.
Microsoft has clarified the timeline, stating, “New installations will be blocked after this date,” and “Existing users will be able to continue using the app for a limited time before full discontinuation.” This suggests that while existing installations might remain functional for a period, access will eventually be completely cut off.
To ensure a seamless transition and continued access to a robust email experience, Microsoft is guiding users to migrate to the full Outlook mobile application. The recommended steps are as follows: Users can opt to click on the “Install Microsoft Outlook” banner within the notification section of the Outlook Lite app. Alternatively, they can manually navigate to their respective app stores, search for “Microsoft Outlook,” and proceed with downloading and installing the application. Upon installation, users will be prompted to log in with their existing credentials to regain access to their emails, calendar, and files.
