On September 8th, according to an announcement by the Sichuan Airport Public Security Bureau, they have provided an update on the incident where a woman was reported to have lit a lighter inside an aircraft cabin and posted it with the caption “Nth time bringing a lighter onto a plane.”
Recently, a video surfaced on social media platforms showing a passenger igniting a lighter in the cabin and accompanying it with the caption “Nth time bringing a lighter onto a plane.”
Investigations revealed that a woman identified as Chi (female, 34 years old) was a passenger on an international flight from Singapore Changi Airport to Chengdu Tianfu International Airport on September 6, 2025.
During the flight, Chi, in an apparent attempt to gain attention and traffic, ignited a lighter she was carrying in her seat and recorded a video of the act.
Upon landing, Chi combined the recorded video with fabricated captions, falsely geotagging the location as Chengdu Tianfu International Airport before publishing it on social media platforms.
Following a thorough investigation, it was determined that Chi had not flown on any domestic routes within the current year, therefore excluding any suspicion of intentional endangerment of public safety.
Currently, our bureau has imposed an administrative detention penalty on Chi in accordance with the law.
The passenger in question had previously shared a selfie video from the cabin, boasting about her repeated success in bringing lighters onto aircraft.
The video depicted the passenger seated next to a window. She appeared to lower the tray table, take a lighter from a small handbag, and ignite it. Through the window, the aircraft’s wing and the night view of the airport could be seen.
The account’s location tag indicated the flight originated from Chengdu Tianfu International Airport, with the passenger claiming it was the “Nth time” she had brought a lighter onto a plane. The relevant videos have since been deleted by her.
On September 7th, media outlets contacted the inquiry desk at Chengdu Tianfu International Airport. A staff member explained that “normally, passenger belongings that pass through the X-ray machine will have corresponding imaging. If there are any suspicions, a manual bag check is required. These items would certainly be detected as the machines would flag them.”
The staff member further emphasized, “Alcoholic beverages that meet the requirements can be checked as luggage, but lighters are strictly prohibited from being carried as they are flammable and explosive items. Concealing a lighter in one’s bag constitutes hiding an ignition source, and bringing it onto an aircraft is a violation of the law.”
