During an interview with IGN at gamescom 2025, Saber Interactive’s Head of Development, Tim Willits, revealed that the co-op shooter game “World War Z” has attracted over 30 million players since its launch in 2019. This significant milestone not only solidifies Saber’s standing in the industry but also potentially boosts Hollywood’s interest in a sequel for the film franchise.
The success of the game is often seen as a positive indicator for the viability of its cinematic counterpart. With the game continuing to maintain its popularity, the “World War Z” series is poised for a potential return to the big screen.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount is prioritizing three major film projects: “Top Gun 3,” a new “Star Trek” film, and a sequel to “World War Z,” which has been over a decade in the making. While Willits emphasized that he has not received official confirmation, he confidently stated, “I’d bet it’s because of the success of this game.”
The 2013 film “World War Z” grossed over $540 million worldwide, making it Brad Pitt’s highest-grossing film at the time. Although a sequel was shelved in 2019 due to budget and creative differences, director David Fincher had previously hinted that its concept bore too much resemblance to the “The Last of Us” TV series, a development he later expressed relief about not proceeding with.

The enduring appeal of the game is likely to reignite interest in a new film installment. While it remains uncertain whether Brad Pitt will reprise his role, any new film project would undoubtedly bring additional attention to Saber’s game. Furthermore, Willits has hinted at “exciting new content” on the horizon for the “World War Z” game, suggesting a promising future for the franchise across both media.
