When discussing China’s most topologically astonishing cities, Chongqing undeniably claims the top spot, with few others daring to challenge its supremacy.
Dubbed the “8D Magic City” by netizens and a notorious challenge for navigation software, Chongqing captivates with its layered, intricately interwoven urban landscape.
If Chongqing’s roads are often described as a “maze,” then its railway network is akin to a “precision instrument.” This network seamlessly integrates conventional and high-speed rail, alongside freight and passenger services, all intricately interwoven in a complex, three-dimensional manner.
A prime example of this “precise synergy” in Chongqing’s railway infrastructure can be found in a dense cluster of railway bridges located in Jingkou Subdistrict, Shapingba District. This location features multiple bridges converging and cascading at different levels, showcasing the city’s engineering prowess.
These bridges span over Tongxing South Road, a major arterial route in Chongqing, with five railway bridges of varying heights arranged sequentially, creating a truly awe-inspiring transportation spectacle.
From top to bottom, these bridges include: the up and down tracks of the Jingxi Line (Jingkou Station to Chongqing West Station), the up and down tracks of the Xinghu Line (Xinglongchang Station to Huduobao Station), the inbound and outbound tracks of the Weijing Line (Weituo Station to Jingkou Station), and the Hubei-Rhone Line (Hubei-Rhone Railway).
The Jingkou railway hub serves as a crucial connector, linking several major railway lines including the Chengdu-Chongqing Intercity Railway, the Yuhuai Railway, the Hubei-Rhone Railway, and the Lanzhou-Chongqing Railway.
Due to the high concentration of railway lines, within a span of just a few hours, one can witness a frequent convergence of Fuxing Hao smart EMUs, CR200J series EMUs, Hexie Hao EMUs, freight trains, and conventional passenger trains. This dynamic scene underscores the intense rail traffic and the sophisticated operational management required.

The full line of the Yuhuai Railway opened on January 13, 2006, with the synchronized activation of Jingkou Station.
The Chengdu-Chongqing High-Speed Railway commenced operations in 2015.
The entire Lanzhou-Chongqing Railway was completed and opened in 2017.
By 2020, the fastest travel time between Chengdu and Chongqing was reduced to a mere 62 minutes, highlighting the significant impact of high-speed rail development.
In 2022, the Zhengzhou-Chongqing High-Speed Railway was fully connected, and the Chongqing East Ring Line Railway also opened in the same year.
The Chongqing West to Yibin East section of the Yumin High-Speed Railway opened in 2024.
The Chongqing East to Qianjiang section of the Yuxia High-Speed Railway is scheduled for official opening in 2025.
Currently, high-speed rail projects such as the Chengdu-Chongqing Central Line, Xi’an-Chongqing, Chongqing-Wanzhou, Chengdu-Dachuan-Wanzhou, and Yibin-Fuling lines are progressing rapidly, indicating that Chongqing’s “8D Magic” is continuously evolving and becoming even more complex and impressive.
