As of September 21st, according to information from Kuaitech, a user named “@phantomofearth” has discovered that the latest Windows 11 preview build (version 26×20.6690) now enables users to set video files, including formats like MOV, AVI, WMV, M4V, and MKV, as dynamic wallpapers.
This functionality can be activated by users through the execution of the command: ViVeTool.exe /enable /id:57645315 via ViVeTool. The introduction of video wallpaper support signifies a potentially significant enhancement to the Windows desktop experience, a feature that has remained largely static for two decades despite Microsoft’s continuous efforts to refine the Windows user interface.
For many years, Windows users have been limited to static wallpapers. Those desiring animated backgrounds typically have had to rely on third-party applications such as Wallpaper Engine. The move by Microsoft to support video dynamic wallpapers in Windows 11 appears to be a reintroduction of a classic feature from Windows Vista. In 2007, Microsoft introduced “Windows DreamScene” with Windows Vista Ultimate, a special feature that allowed users to set animated desktop backgrounds as their wallpapers. This feature was well-received for its aesthetic appeal and personalization options, though it was not universally adopted, possibly due to resource demands or limited availability. The current iteration in Windows 11 preview builds suggests a potential revival of this visually engaging capability for a broader user base.
However, it is important to note that Microsoft has not yet made an official announcement regarding this feature. Further confirmation will be required through an official statement to ascertain whether this functionality will be formally released to the general public in future Windows 11 updates. The inclusion of such a feature could significantly enhance user customization and bring a more dynamic and personalized feel to the Windows desktop environment, potentially competing with or complementing existing third-party solutions.
