On September 22nd, Yang Qing, Chairman and Party Secretary of Dongfeng Motor Corporation, visited Shenzhen for a meeting with Ren Zhengfei, Founder of Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., and Huawei’s Rotating Chairman Xu Zhijun. The two parties engaged in in-depth discussions on various topics, including strengthening strategic mutual trust, deepening strategic cooperation, and promoting innovation in corporate governance and operational mechanisms.
Ren Zhengfei emphasized, “The fundamental of the automotive industry is to build good cars, and the highest level of a car is safety.” Xu Zhijun pledged that “Huawei will fully support Dongfeng’s transformation.”
The detailed outcomes of this collaboration suggest a greater depth than previous engagements. Both parties plan to work together in three key areas: product definition, intelligent technology, and marketing/service ecosystems. Specifically, Huawei will open up its advanced process and system capabilities to Dongfeng. In turn, Dongfeng will introduce Huawei’s management methodologies, such as Integrated Product Development (IPD) and Integrated Product Marketing and Services (IPMS), to foster deep synergy and innovation at the process level.
The introduction of Huawei’s management methodologies by Dongfeng is fundamentally about achieving “alignment of underlying logic” between the enterprises. From the very source of product research and development to the end of market services, both sides will collaborate using a unified language and set of standards. This approach is expected not only to enhance efficiency but also to mitigate common industry issues such as the disconnect between technological development and mass production deployment.
This in-depth discussion is not an isolated event, but rather a continuation of their ongoing collaboration. In May of this year, Dongfeng Motor and Huawei signed a comprehensive strategic cooperation agreement in Wuhan. Furthermore, on September 19th, the Dongfeng Automotive and Huawei Joint Innovation Laboratory was officially inaugurated, which will focus on strengthening cooperation in areas such as in-vehicle software, R&D platforms, intelligent assisted driving, AI generalized scenario applications, and embodied intelligence.
However, the progression of this collaboration may not be entirely smooth. Challenges such as balancing Dongfeng’s “whole vehicle ownership rights” with Huawei’s “technology empowerment boundaries” and ensuring the seamless integration of Huawei’s management methodologies with Dongfeng’s existing systems are issues that both parties will need to continuously address.
