On September 27th, a video circulated online showing “a hiker falling off a cliff on a snow-capped mountain peak.” The footage depicts a group of climbers ascending a snowy summit. Several individuals are seen standing ahead, while one person in red is in a crouching position. As this individual stands up, they suddenly lean forward, begin to slide, and disappear from view.
The video indicates that the person attempted to regain their footing several times but was unsuccessful.
On September 26th, staff from the Ganzi Prefecture Sports Bureau confirmed that the incident occurred on the 23rd, near the 5588-meter peak of Mount Nama. The fallen climber, a 31-year-old man, has been confirmed deceased. He was ascending with companions when he unclipped his safety rope to find a better angle for taking photos of his friends, leading to the tragic accident. A relative of the deceased revealed to reporters that the man tripped on his crampons while standing up, causing him to fall.
The aforementioned staff member emphasized that the climbing activity involved a total of four participants and that no prior application was submitted to the local sports department before the ascent. The deceased’s body has been recovered, but retrieval is proving challenging due to the difficult terrain and inclement mountain weather. Efforts are underway to transport the body.
The staff also stated that Mount Nama is currently an undeveloped and unapproved climbing area. “They didn’t report it to us and went up secretly without informing us,” they added. Government departments are still handling the related matters.
Reporters noted that several guides have posted online offering ascents of Mount Nama at prices ranging from one thousand to several thousand yuan. Climbing enthusiasts explained that Mount Nama is not considered a highly difficult peak, and costs can vary significantly. Trekking is generally more affordable, while a horseback ride up and down costs 2400 yuan, plus guide fees. Excluding equipment, one climber reported spending 6000 yuan for their recent ascent.
