On October 3rd, reports emerged about a startling incident involving a smart toilet, a fixture becoming increasingly common in households. A woman’s recent harrowing experience has sent shivers down many spines.
The incident, which occurred last month, involved Ms. Lin using her smart toilet’s bidet function as usual. However, after pressing the button, the device experienced a brief malfunction. Subsequently, the toilet unexpectedly sprayed scalding hot water, accompanied by steam.
The shock of the hot water caused her to “jump up and scream.” She immediately ran to the bathroom and rinsed the affected area with cold water from the shower for an hour. Despite applying burn cream afterward, she continued to experience discomfort, leading her to seek medical attention. She was diagnosed with a superficial second-degree perineal burn, affecting less than 1% of her body surface area.
Medical professionals have emphasized that while the burn area is small, the location is particularly sensitive and could potentially lead to long-term pain and psychological distress.
Ms. Lin revealed that the toilet had previously exhibited occasional issues with excessively high water temperatures, but this was not given significant attention.
Following the incident, Ms. Lin’s initial attempt to contact the brand’s customer service went unanswered. It was only after she posted about the event on social media and tagged the official page the following day that the brand reached out to her to discuss a resolution.
This is not an isolated case. In 2023, a woman in Liaoning province also suffered second-degree anal burns when her smart toilet seat sprayed boiling water. The manufacturer later admitted that a blockage of scale in the nozzle had caused the abnormal water temperature.
Data from the Black Cat Complaint platform indicates that over 700 complaints regarding smart toilets have been filed in the past three months, citing issues such as electric shock, short circuits, and abnormal water temperatures. If you own a smart toilet at home, it is crucial to conduct regular checks to prevent potential accidents and injuries.
