October 8th, 2023 – TechInsights. The highly anticipated budget version of the Tesla Model Y has officially launched in the US market. However, this $5,000 price reduction comes with a trade-off, transforming what was once a feature-rich vehicle into a more utilitarian offering.
A prime example is the design of the rear cup holder, which has been described as a “once-in-a-lifetime” sight and has led to netizens calling it the “lowest of the low” trim. This significant change highlights the extent of the cost-cutting measures implemented for this new variant.
The new Model Y is named the Model Y Standard, with a starting price of $39,990, making it $5,000 cheaper than the previous entry-level Model Y (now referred to as the Long Range version). This makes the Model Y accessible to a wider range of consumers who may have previously found it out of reach.
The range has been reduced from 357 miles to 321 miles. Furthermore, features such as the panoramic glass roof, front and rear light strips have been removed. Interior lighting and suspension systems have also seen downgrades.
Additionally, the steering wheel is now manually adjustable, front seat ventilation, rear seat heating, and the 8-inch touchscreen have been omitted. The 19-inch wheels have been replaced with 18-inch wheels, with an optional upgrade to 19-inch costing an additional $1500.
In terms of performance, the Standard Model Y is rear-wheel drive, capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds. The audio system features only 7 speakers (compared to 15 in other versions) and lacks a subwoofer. The driver assistance features do not include the automatic steering function.
