Recently, Chinese manufacturer EHang Intelligent announced the launch of its new generation long-range autonomous passenger aircraft, the VT35. The standard version is priced at 6.5 million RMB in the Chinese market.
This new model, an evolution of the VT30 prototype, is a composite-wing electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft. It is primarily designed for medium to long-haul transportation scenarios, including inter-city, inter-sea, and mountainous routes. With its unmanned operation, point-to-point direct travel capabilities, and environmentally friendly design, the VT35 is poised to usher in a new era for low-altitude urban and inter-city mobility.
The VT35 features a tandem wing, two-seat configuration. It utilizes eight distributed lift propellers for vertical take-off and landing and employs a pusher propeller along with fixed wings for efficient cruise flight. The aircraft boasts a designed range of approximately 200 kilometers on a full load. Compared to its predecessor, the VT30, the VT35 maintains excellent aerodynamic efficiency and flight stability while effectively reducing its overall size.
The VT35 has a maximum take-off weight of 950 kilograms, a length of approximately 8 meters, a height of about 3 meters, and a wingspan of approximately 8 meters. This compact design not only minimizes ground operational risks but also enhances economic efficiency. Crucially, the VT35 can utilize existing landing sites for the EH216-S, including urban locations like parks, rooftops of office buildings, and parking lots, which can serve as convenient “hubs” for passengers, facilitating direct travel between city centers.
Furthermore, existing landing sites and operational points for the EH216-S can also be equipped for VT35 operations in the future. This not only enriches low-altitude application scenarios but also significantly improves the utilization rate of existing infrastructure, contributing to a more robust and integrated urban air mobility network.
The VT35 is capable of automated flight along pre-set routes and can operate in conjunction with multiple aircraft. Its sophisticated detection and avoidance capabilities ensure a high level of flight safety.
In March 2025, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) accepted EHang Intelligent’s application for a Type Certificate (TC) for the VT35 autonomous passenger aircraft. The aircraft is currently undergoing airworthiness certification, with internal testing and experimental flights progressing steadily. This marks a significant step towards commercial readiness and regulatory approval for this advanced unmanned aerial system. The development of the VT35 highlights the accelerating pace of innovation in China’s burgeoning eVTOL sector, aiming to address challenges in urban transportation and create new economic opportunities through advanced air mobility solutions.
