October 26th News from MyDrivers – NorthridgeFix, a professional in hardware repair, frequently shares cases of graphics cards being resurrected from damage. However, sometimes their expertise falls short, especially when faced with the costly and delicate RTX 5090 Founders Edition (FE) model.
They recently received two damaged RTX 5090 cards, both of which failed after being modified with water cooling. While one custom non-FE card was successfully revived and restored to air cooling, the other FE model proved beyond repair.
The issue stems from the internal design of the RTX 5090 FE. Instead of a single integrated circuit board, it employs a modular design. The PCIe interface is located on a separate daughterboard, connected to the main board via an internal connector with a substantial number of pins. Similarly, the display output interfaces are also on their own dedicated daughterboards, attached to the main board through internal connectors.
During the user’s attempt to install water cooling, a critical failure occurred: one pin was bent, and another was broken. This resulted in the card being able to receive power and display seemingly normal voltage readings, but it was unable to send any output signal. This type of damage highlights the intricate and delicate nature of high-density connectors used in modern high-end components.
Upon investigation, NorthridgeFix discovered that the internal connectors on the RTX 5090 FE are strikingly similar to those found in mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. However, after scouring all available channels, they were unable to find identical replacement parts, forcing them to abandon the repair. This situation underscores a broader trend in consumer electronics where specialized, proprietary components can become a significant bottleneck for repairs, even for professionals.
It’s a stark reminder that just two tiny pins can render a multi-thousand dollar RTX 5090 effectively useless. This experience serves as a crucial warning for owners of high-end graphics cards, regardless of the specific model. It is strongly advised against attempting any disassembly or modification yourself. If water cooling is a desired feature, it is far more prudent and cost-effective to opt for cards that come with pre-installed water blocks from reputable manufacturers.
