On October 28, Tesla Vice President Tom Zhu shared the latest progress in green energy initiatives at Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory and the accompanying Shanghai Energy Storage Gigafactory.
Currently, the rooftops of the Shanghai Gigafactory are fully equipped with photovoltaic (PV) panels. This installation generates an estimated 11 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually, contributing to a reduction of approximately 4,600 tons of carbon emissions.
Adjacent to the Gigafactory, the Shanghai Energy Storage Gigafactory is also undergoing the installation of PV panels. This expansion is projected to yield an additional 6 million kWh of electricity per year, leading to a further reduction of 2,500 tons of carbon emissions.
In synergy, these two major facilities are expected to collectively generate 17 million kWh of clean electricity annually, surpassing a carbon emission reduction of 7,100 tons. This significant achievement positions Tesla as a new benchmark for “green factories” within both the automotive manufacturing and energy storage sectors, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable operations that extends beyond product development.
It is noteworthy that Tesla’s dedication to green practices is not confined to its manufacturing sites. The company is actively exploring and implementing “self-generation and self-consumption” models for clean electricity at its retail stores and Supercharger stations.
For instance, the Shanghai Kangqiao Direct Sales Paint and Collision Center’s rooftop contributes 400,000 kWh of green electricity annually, consequently reducing carbon emissions by 170 tons.
Tom Zhu emphasized that the entire lifecycle of Tesla products, from the generation and storage of clean electricity to its ultimate use, embodies Tesla’s commitment to a sustainable future. This endeavor not only highlights the company’s environmental responsibility but also acknowledges the contribution of every Tesla owner in building a more sustainable tomorrow for the planet.
