Beyond Electrics: Lamborghini Catches Fire After Crashing into Median in Chengdu, Reduced to Empty Shell

November 7th News from Kuaikeji: While electric vehicle fires invariably attract significant attention, it’s important to note that conventional gasoline-powered cars, including high-value luxury vehicles, are also susceptible to combustion incidents.

Early yesterday morning, around 6 AM, a tragic traffic accident involving a Lamborghini supercar occurred on the fourth section of Chengdu’s North Third Ring Road, leading to a traffic congestion lasting approximately one hour.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that the Lamborghini supercar initially had a minor collision with another vehicle before losing control and veering into a tree within the green belt. Following significant damage to its front end, the vehicle rapidly began to emit smoke and subsequently caught fire.

Fortunately, the occupants of the vehicle were able to evacuate safely after the accident and were not trapped. However, the Lamborghini was extensively damaged by the fire, leaving little more than its chassis and rendering any repair efforts impossible. The exact cause of the accident is currently under investigation.

This incident is not an isolated one. Industry insiders suggest that high-performance supercars like Lamborghinis are prone to catching fire after collisions due to several contributing factors:

Fuel System Damage: A collision can rupture the fuel tank or fuel lines, leading to the leakage of gasoline. This leaked fuel, upon contact with hot components—such as exhaust pipes which can reach temperatures of several hundred degrees Celsius—or electrical sparks, can ignite instantaneously.

Electrical Short Circuits: The impact of a crash can cause wiring to become dislodged, damaging insulation layers. This can lead to the positive and negative terminals coming into contact, generating sparks that can ignite fuel vapors.

Specific Design Considerations: The rear-engine design found in many supercars can result in less efficient heat dissipation. Additionally, the epoxy resins used as adhesives in carbon fiber body construction often have a low heat resistance (around 200°C), which can facilitate the rapid spread of fire once ignited.

We would like to remind drivers that supercars with rear-engine layouts have a rearward weight bias, leading to significantly different handling characteristics compared to ordinary vehicles. Coupled with large displacement engines and high horsepower, these vehicles can easily experience oversteer during rapid acceleration, leading to loss of control. Therefore, it is strongly advised that drivers who are not professionally trained exercise extreme caution when operating such vehicles.
