On July 16th, JD.com announced a new special purchase policy for its couriers, specifically regarding electric bicycles. This initiative has garnered significant attention.
JD.com is offering electric bicycles to its delivery personnel with a repayment plan: if a courier completes 3,000 delivery orders within 90 days, the full purchase price of the bicycle will be refunded.
At the end of the second quarter, JD.com’s full-time delivery fleet had exceeded 150,000 riders, and the company has prepared a corresponding 150,000 electric bicycles for this program.
The program has commenced in Beijing, Nanjing, and Changsha, with plans for a phased rollout nationwide.
The electric bicycle featured in this initiative is named “Chijia Guangren X1.” It boasts a striking design with a red exterior, characterized by streamlined cutting techniques that refract light, giving it a vibrant, almost armored appearance.
In terms of performance, the X1 is equipped with a 3500W peak power motor, providing substantial power for quick starts and rapid acceleration, essential for efficient deliveries.
Ergonomics are a key design consideration. The bicycle features a non-slip “camel hump” saddle with high-resilience memory foam to absorb vibrations. Additionally, an optional wide lumbar support is available, allowing for a 180-degree recline for rest.
The delivery box is constructed from environmentally friendly PU foam material, featuring an ultra-low thermal conductivity of 0.018W/(m·K). This significantly enhances insulation, boasting a 100% increase in heat preservation time. A notable feature is its illumination capability at night.
Furthermore, the bicycle is designed to accommodate a portable onboard refrigerator. This unit utilizes dual-core cooling chips, similar to those used in aerospace technology, reportedly achieving 100% greater chilling efficiency compared to traditional car refrigerators. This ensures that frozen items remain perfectly chilled even after delivery.
From JD.com’s perspective, this initiative carries multiple strategic advantages. Firstly, it provides couriers with standardized and quality-assured delivery equipment, which can enhance the overall image and professionalism of JD’s delivery services.
Secondly, this policy is expected to strengthen the bond between the couriers and the platform. The incentive of a repaid bicycle purchase upon meeting the 3,000-order target within 90 days will likely motivate couriers to increase their productivity and engagement.
For the couriers, this policy presents both opportunity and challenge. The primary benefit is the chance to acquire a crucial work tool––an electric bicycle––at a significantly reduced cost, potentially even for free, thereby resolving a key logistical hurdle for their profession.
However, the conditions stipulated are demanding. Completing 3,000 orders in 90 days translates to an average of approximately 33 orders per day. In practice, couriers face numerous unpredictable factors, such as adverse weather conditions, uneven order distribution across different zones, and varying order complexity. Achieving this target is by no means a simple task.
