On August 15th, according to reports, a Ford Mustang Mach-E electric vehicle was involved in a serious accident in the San Francisco Bay Area, United States. The vehicle reportedly lost its ability to stop at high speed, ultimately colliding with and overturning a Mitsubishi ahead.
Video footage captured by a passing motorist shows the green Ford Mustang Mach-E electric vehicle appearing to have a steering lock, inability to brake or steer. The vehicle was seen scraping against roadside guardrails, yet it continued to move forward uncontrollably.
Footage from inside the cabin suggests the Mach-E driver appeared conscious and showed no signs of sudden illness. The driver’s hands were off the steering wheel, possibly in a gesture of prayer for the vehicle to stop before the impact.
The runaway vehicle eventually entered an exit ramp. Due to the absence of guardrails, the Mach-E collided with a red Mitsubishi Mirage merging from the right. The impact caused the small Mitsubishi to flip over. Both vehicles came to a halt after the collision, with airbags having deployed.
Bystanders who filmed the incident reported that neither of the drivers involved sustained serious injuries.
However, at this time, there are no investigations confirming that the Ford Mach-E electric vehicle lost control and crashed due to a mechanical or system failure.
The incident has sparked considerable discussion online. Some netizens commented, “Even if the vehicle experiences a severe system failure, such as a steering lock, the accelerator and brake pedals should still respond, or the driver could repeatedly press the parking button to force an emergency stop.” This highlights a common expectation of redundancies in vehicle safety systems.
Media outlets have reportedly reached out to Ford Motor Company for a statement, and further updates are anticipated.
