On the evening of August 18th, iG Electronic Sports Club officially announced its lawsuit against Bilibili game streamer “Xuan Shen,” releasing a strong statement condemning cyberbullying and infringement. This legal action stems from a prolonged period of severe attacks, defamation, and incitement to cyber violence targeting the iG club, its players, and its fans by the streamer. iG asserts that Xuan Shen’s actions have crossed ethical boundaries and violated legal statutes, including the Civil Code.
The statement details that the streamer’s behavior has been characterized by sustained, malicious attacks and defamatory content, intended to incite cyberbullying, which iG deems to be beyond the pale of acceptable conduct and potentially in violation of Chinese law. To protect its legitimate rights and interests, the club has lodged a complaint with relevant authorities and initiated legal proceedings. Furthermore, iG has formally requested the live-streaming platform to immediately suspend the involved streamer’s account.
Following the loss of his commentary rights, Xuan Shen adopted a “black screen” streaming format, where his commentary became even more pointed. He publicly accused iG player Rookie and his girlfriend of running a “scam” business and attributed iG’s loss against AL to player TheShy, calling him “too weak.”
These specific accusations are believed to have significantly escalated the conflict, prompting iG’s decision to pursue legal recourse.
Analyzing this situation, such public accusations, especially those targeting individual players and their personal lives, can have a deeply damaging impact on morale and public perception. While freedom of speech is valued, it is generally understood to have limits when it infringes upon the rights and reputations of others. iG’s legal action reflects an effort to establish clear boundaries for online commentary within the esports community.
Despite the lawsuit, Xuan Shen has reportedly shown no signs of apprehension. In a recent broadcast, he is quoted as saying, “A small compensation is insignificant, I’m completely unafraid!” This defiant stance suggests a potential counter-narrative or a belief in his right to express his opinions, even if controversial. It also highlights the potential for ongoing friction between streamers and esports organizations, particularly when subjective interpretations of player performance or personal matters become public.
