According to reports from BoardChannels on August 20th, AMD has officially announced the discontinuation of the B650 chipset. Motherboard manufacturers are no longer able to procure B650 chips and are advised to fully transition to the B850 series product line as its successor.
This signifies the end of one of the most popular mainstream platforms for the AM5 socket. The B650 series chipsets, encompassing both B650 and B650E, were first introduced in October 2022, positioned as entry-level options for AM5 motherboards.
Data from German retailer Mindfactory for the 32nd week of this year indicates that the company sold 2,475 AMD motherboards during that week. Among these, the B650 proved to be the most popular, with 500 units sold, accounting for 18.3% of the total sales. This popularity underscores the B650’s strong market presence and consumer adoption within the AM5 ecosystem.
With the discontinuation of production and supply for the B650 chipset, motherboard manufacturers are now entering a phase of inventory digestion. It is anticipated that these clearance plans will conclude around October, though inventory in the broader distribution channels might persist for a longer period. This transition period will be crucial for manufacturers to manage existing stock and pave the way for new product introductions.
The discontinuation of the B650 chipset signals a market-wide shift towards the B850 and the entry-level B840 series. A key upgrade in the B850 chipset is its support for PCIe 5.0. Furthermore, the B650E chipset offered 24 dedicated PCIe 5.0 lanes, positioning it similarly to the higher-tier X870 chipset in terms of advanced connectivity options. The introduction of the B850 series is expected to bring enhanced bandwidth and future-proofing capabilities to a wider range of AM5 motherboards.
