As of September 9th, Dell is reportedly conducting layoffs in China. This development comes after the company had previously denied rumors of a complete withdrawal from the Chinese market.
According to domestic media reports, Dell is scheduled to hold individual meetings with affected employees this week, with the final day for these sessions being October 10th.
Employees have indicated that the layoffs primarily impact Dell’s EMC storage divisions and its Client Solutions Group (CSG) in Shanghai and Xiamen. One employee described this as the third round of layoffs in recent months, with previous dates for dismissals being August 15th and September 12th.
Prior to these official announcements, several Dell employees had already shared information online about significant workforce reductions at the COE office in Wujiaochang, Shanghai, affecting multiple core departments such as CDC in Zhongshan Park and the COE in Wujiaochang. This suggests a broad restructuring impacting various key operational centers.
According to some affected employees, the company’s global workforce has been reduced from 120,000 to 108,000. While some employees are receiving compensation packages such as N+3, the overall sentiment is one of concern, with even new hires, who have only been with the company for seven months, receiving N+2 compensation.
Dell’s employee numbers for the fiscal year 2024 were approximately 120,000, a decrease of 13,000 (about 9.8%) from the previous year. For the fiscal year 2025, ending January 31, 2025, the total employee count is projected to be around 108,000, marking a decrease of approximately 10% or 12,000 employees year-over-year.
These recent layoffs are not entirely unprecedented. In April of this year, Dell China also experienced a round of layoffs, which reportedly affected up to 120 individuals and involved significant changes in senior management.
