On September 12th, news emerged that a woman in a residential compound in Guangzhou threw a 20-inch suitcase from the 43rd floor. The woman claimed that she accidentally dropped the suitcase from her balcony and had no malicious intent. However, due to her actions, she has been detained on suspicion of the crime of high-altitude object dropping. Her behavior not only disregards public morality but has also violated the law.
Under the law, it is prohibited to throw objects from buildings. If objects thrown from buildings or falling from buildings cause harm to others, the infringer shall bear the tort liability according to the law.
It is understood that high-altitude object dropping poses significant dangers. Even a small egg can endanger human life. To prevent such incidents, individuals should refrain from leaning out of balconies to dry clothes, avoid placing potted plants on balcony railings or window edges, and during extreme weather, proactively check for risks and secure doors and windows to prevent items from falling.
Furthermore, it is crucial to prevent the indiscriminate discarding of cigarette butts. Although small, cigarette butts can reach surface temperatures of 200-300 degrees Celsius, with central temperatures as high as 700-800 degrees Celsius. Discarded cigarette butts can cause burns if they fall on pedestrians. If they land on dry, loose combustible materials, they can easily ignite fires, leading to potentially severe consequences.
High-altitude object dropping is not only uncivilized behavior but also a criminal act that creates numerous safety hazards and poses a severe threat to the personal safety of others. Therefore, it is imperative for everyone to jointly resist high-altitude object dropping and foster a harmonious and civilized social environment.
