According to an assessment by the international evaluation firm Sproule, this region contains one of the world’s largest lithium deposits. The confirmed reserves amount to 43 million tons of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE). This figure is remarkably close to the estimated 50 million tons held by South America’s “Lithium Triangle” (comprising Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile). This discovery has the potential to fundamentally alter the global lithium resource supply landscape.

Strategically located in the heart of Europe, the new lithium deposit is in close proximity to Germany’s domestic market and major European automotive manufacturing hubs. The sheer scale of these reserves is estimated to be sufficient to meet Germany’s lithium needs for several decades, greatly enhancing the nation’s resource security and reducing its reliance on foreign imports.

Furthermore, it achieves an impressive 95% water recycling rate, leading to substantially reduced energy consumption and a minimized ecological footprint. The geopolitical implications of this discovery are profound, especially in light of recent global events. Currently, Europe relies on imports for 87% of its lithium, a dependency that has been highlighted as a critical vulnerability, particularly following the conflict in Ukraine. The development of the Altmark lithium mine is expected to shift Europe’s lithium supply from a “South American dependency” to “domestic security.” Projections suggest that by 2030, one in every five batteries produced in Europe could be manufactured using lithium sourced from the Altmark region, underscoring its potential to bolster European energy independence and the growth of its electric vehicle industry.
