It is a stark reality that some individuals obtain driving licenses through driving schools, yet remain a vast distance from truly mastering the art of driving.
Recently, a traffic jam occurred on a highway, reportedly due to an SUV driving parallel to a large bus for an extended period, preventing vehicles behind from overtaking normally.
Footage from a rear vehicle’s dashcam shows the SUV on a two-lane highway traveling side-by-side with a tour bus. This occupied the entire lane ahead, and despite the video car flashing its high beams as a warning, it had no effect.
Such behavior has understandably angered many netizens. A common sentiment expressed was that the SUV driver lacked basic road safety awareness. Many also called for traffic authorities to impose severe penalties on such actions and to make them public.
When a smaller vehicle travels parallel to a larger one for an extended duration, the lateral distance is typically only 1-2 meters, with insufficient buffer space in front and behind. This leaves almost no room for evasion in case of unforeseen circumstances.
The correct procedure for overtaking a large vehicle on a highway, after confirming it is safe, is to firmly press the accelerator and accelerate with full force, avoiding gradual speed increases. The speed should be increased to 20-30 km/h faster than the large vehicle (e.g., if the large vehicle is traveling at 80 km/h, the smaller vehicle should reach 100-110 km/h). The aim is to keep the parallel driving time within 10 seconds.
In summary, driving slower is not always safer. When speed is necessary, it must be applied decisively. Otherwise, it could lead to harm for oneself and others.
