On October 16th， the Ultra High Definition Video Industry Alliance officially announced the release of the new standard for Vivid Cinema Technology， marking a significant upgrade in China’s self-developed audio-visual technology.
In August 2024， with the approval of the National Film Administration， the China Film Scientific Research Institute (also known as the Film Technology Quality Inspection Institute of the Central Propaganda Department) collaborated with industry research institutions and equipment manufacturers to establish a film working group within the Ultra High Definition Video Industry Alliance (UWA Alliance). This initiative has created a platform for industry technical synergy and standard development.
Under the guidance of the National Film Administration， the China Film Scientific Research Institute spearheaded a joint technical breakthrough involving over ten organizations， leading to the development of “Vivid Cinema Technology”—a high-format film production and projection technology compatible with international cinema standards.
The alliance has formally released two key standards: “Vivid Cinema Technology Part 2-1: Technical Specification for Vivid Image Distribution Master of LED Cinema” and “Vivid Cinema Technology Part 3-1: Technical Requirements and Measurement Methods for Vivid Audio-Visual Cinema End Audio Processor.” These standards have recently passed technical review and been open for public comment.
LED cinema screens possess inherent technical advantages， including high brightness， superior contrast， expanded dynamic range， and enhanced uniformity. These characteristics offer audiences exceptionally high-quality visual effects and a novel viewing experience， positioning LED screens as a crucial medium for the application of high-format films in cinemas.
As of September 2025， approximately 180 LED cinema screens have been deployed in China. These screens demonstrate impressive growth， with both their box office contribution and number of installations experiencing an annual increase of over 55%. This burgeoning trend signifies a pivotal technological evolution and a key area for industrial development within the film sector， providing a robust market foundation and promising future for Vivid Cinema Technology.
Under the National Film Administration’s direction and in collaboration with entities like China Huaxia Film Distribution Co.， Ltd. and Huawei Technologies Co.， Ltd.， the China Film Scientific Research Institute established the “Vivid Cinema Technology Part 2-1: Technical Specification for Vivid Image Distribution Master of LED Cinema.” This standard meticulously outlines technical requirements for the production environment and systems of distribution masters， image characteristics， and peak bitrates of data packages. During the mastering process， optimizations are applied to key metrics such as brightness， high dynamic range， frame rate， and bitrate， ensuring superior visual fidelity.
Films produced according to this standard， when screened on LED cinema displays， exhibit a markedly different and enhanced viewing experience compared to conventional versions. Audiences are treated to sharper image details， richer tonal gradations， and a more profound visual impact， pushing the boundaries of cinematic immersion.
Currently， films such as “The Starry Sky of the Three Kingdoms Part 1，” “The Thousand Faces of a Detective，” “Lang Lang’s Life，” and “Wind， Clouds， and Volcanoes” in their Vivid versions have been officially released in cinemas equipped with the supporting technology nationwide.
