According to media reports on October 19th, a popular mukbang influencer known as “Shenyang Shānpàng” (沈阳山胖), who boasts millions of followers, has decided to undergo gastric sleeve surgery to address his severe obesity. Reaching a staggering weight of 350 jin (approximately 175 kg), he expressed serious concerns about his health.
In a video posted on October 18th, he shared that he had already lost over 20 jin (approximately 10 kg) within just three days following the procedure. His aspiration is to reach a target weight of 150 jin (approximately 75 kg).
The rise of sensationalist mukbang content, often amplified by platform algorithms, has garnered significant attention. Some industry insiders have revealed that certain streamers go to extreme lengths, even resorting to surgically altering their taste buds, to consume bizarre foods in their pursuit of online fame and engagement, often at the expense of their well-being.
Dr. Li Xiaocui (李晓翠) from Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University pointed out that prolonged periods of binge eating can lead to severe metabolic and endocrine disorders. These can manifest as hypertension, hyperglycemia, hyperuricemia, and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. In extreme cases, it can even result in sudden death.
More alarmingly, some mukbang influencers frequently induce vomiting to sustain their live streams, disrupting natural eating patterns. The repeated reflux of stomach acid can cause esophageal burns, significantly increasing the risk of esophageal cancer. This practice can also impair liver, gallbladder, and pancreatic functions, and in severe instances, trigger anorexia nervosa.
This behavior of “eating and then vomiting, or vomiting while eating” not only leads to substantial food wastage but also disseminates unhealthy eating habits and sets a poor example for the public.
