NVIDIA, recently celebrated as the first company globally to reach a $5 trillion market valuation, is actively pursuing numerous collaborative ventures, with a significant focus on artificial intelligence. However, a notable partnership with Nokia centers on the burgeoning field of 6G technology.
NVIDIA has invested $1 billion in Nokia, acquiring a 2.9% stake and becoming the largest shareholder. This strategic alliance encompasses a broad range of initiatives, including the joint development of the Aerial RAN Computer Pro, the first telecommunications computing platform designed to support 6G. It also involves Nokia integrating NVIDIA’s AI-RAN technology and enabling native CUDA support for telecommunications infrastructure.
Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, emphasized the critical role of telecommunications as a fundamental national infrastructure, describing it as the digital nervous system for the U.S. economy and security. He posited that AI-RAN, powered by NVIDIA’s CUDA and artificial intelligence, will revolutionize the telecommunications industry, marking a generational platform shift. This move, he believes, will enable the U.S. to reclaim global leadership in this vital infrastructure technology.
Beyond the official pronouncements, a deeper understanding of NVIDIA’s investment in Nokia and 6G emerges from earlier statements by Jensen Huang. He has previously expressed his view that the U.S. lost its leadership in the 5G era – a development he deemed avoidable. This perspective directly informs the current focus on 6G.
Huang’s vision for 6G mirrors his sentiments regarding 5G. In prior interviews, he has articulated that U.S. technological standards should indeed be the global benchmarks for telecommunications. He acknowledged that while the U.S. should have been a global leader in 5G, certain policy decisions led to a forfeiture of that position, resulting in a world not built upon foundational American technology. NVIDIA’s objective with this 6G initiative is to proactively prevent a similar outcome in the crucial advancements of 6G and artificial intelligence.
Huang stated, “We will reinvent 5G, we will get America into the 6G race, and restart the creation of telecom technology. We will start defining the standards, and we will make American technology the foundation for the rest of the world. That’s ARC.” This statement signifies a clear ambition to reassert American dominance in shaping the future of global telecommunications infrastructure and standards.
