While nicknames can sometimes be affectionate or playful, the moniker this man gave his ex-wife was clearly intended to be derogatory, sparking widespread online discussion.
In October 2025, the divorce case between this couple escalated from the local Ushak Family Court all the way to the Turkish Court of Cassation. Though both parties agreed to the divorce, the wife accused her husband of repeatedly sending her insulting messages. Portions of these messages, made public by local media, included aggressive phrases such as, “Get lost, I don’t want to see your face,” and “Let the devil see your face.”
Furthermore, the court verified that he had saved his wife’s name in his phone as “Tombik,” meaning “chubby” or “roly-poly” in Turkish.
Considering this evidence, the local court determined that his actions constituted psychological abuse. This ruling was subsequently upheld by the second civil chamber of the Court of Cassation.
The court’s decision stated: “The denigration, mockery, or inappropriate naming of one spouse by the other violates the obligation of respect within the marital relationship. Such behavior constitutes fault. Even when saving a spouse’s name in a contact list, the boundaries of respect should not be crossed.”
Previously, Turkish courts had accepted text messages and social media content as evidence. However, this divorce case marks the first instance where a contact list entry has been established as admissible legal evidence.
According to local media outlet 《Memur Hukuk》, Turkey’s Civil Code stipulates that spouses “have an obligation to be loyal, respectful, and understanding towards each other.” This latest ruling signifies that this obligation extends beyond overt actions and words, encompassing private communication as well.
The man counter-sued his wife after she filed for divorce, accusing her of infidelity. However, the court deemed the evidence insufficient and considered it slander, rejecting the counterclaim. Consequently, he was ordered to increase child support and alimony payments.
This divorce case, following the recent attention garnered by an Indian newlywed couple seeking marital counseling due to disagreements over their pets, has once again captured public attention on social media.
