October 31st, in Maoming, Guangdong, an incident involving multiple wedding vehicles driving in a “serpentine” pattern, obstructing traffic on a main road, has garnered significant attention. While the desire for a grand wedding ceremony is understandable, it is crucial that such celebrations do not come at the expense of legal and public safety regulations.
The video footage shows a convoy of approximately a dozen cars meticulously maneuvering in a “snake-like” fashion, occupying all four lanes of the road for an extended period. This behavior not only caused significant inconvenience but also posed a potential hazard to other road users.
The incident sparked widespread discussion online, and according to the latest reports, local traffic police have summoned all drivers involved to cooperate with the investigation.
According to Article 36 of the Road Traffic Safety Law, motor vehicles must adhere to their designated lanes. The “serpentine” driving formation used by this wedding convoy, which completely blocked all lanes and prevented other vehicles from proceeding normally, is a clear violation of “driving not in accordance with designated lanes.” Such an offense typically carries a penalty of 3 demerit points.
Further referencing Article 90 of the Road Traffic Safety Law, drivers can be fined between 20 and 200 yuan. A precedent was set in Kuqa City, Xinjiang, where a wedding convoy that occupied three lanes was fined 200 yuan.
It is important to note that if such obstruction leads to severe traffic congestion or accidents, drivers may be held administratively liable under the Public Security Administration Punishments Law.
