On September 1st, according to Kuai Technology, Huawei’s Executive Director and Chairman of the Terminal BG, Yu Chengdong, and SAIC Group President Jia Jianxu recently met to discuss the story behind the HarmonyOS Intelligent Drive Xingshe (鸿蒙智行尚界). The article delves into the strategic rationale behind Huawei’s collaboration with SAIC for the fifth generation of HarmonyOS Intelligent Drive vehicles.
During an interview, host Shi Xiaonuo inquired about Huawei’s decision to partner with SAIC for the fifth iteration of HarmonyOS Intelligent Drive and specifically asked, “What is the scale of the Xingshe project, and what resources has SAIC invested to support it?”
Jia Jianxu responded by stating that SAIC has allocated independent resources for the Xingshe project. He elaborated that SAIC’s R&D team is based in Anting. To better accommodate Huawei’s team, Jia Jianxu relocated all SAIC colleagues involved in the Xingshe project to Jinqiao. They leased two buildings, mobilizing approximately 3,000 personnel to facilitate the collaboration, including a dedicated styling team.
Yu Chengdong further highlighted SAIC Group’s comprehensive supply chain capabilities and strong cost control, which are crucial for bringing Huawei’s advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and HarmonyOS cockpit to a price point below 200,000 RMB. This affordability was a significant factor that impressed Yu Chengdong and drove the collaboration, as previous HarmonyOS Intelligent Drive models were priced above this threshold, largely due to cost constraints.
During discussions with Yu Chengdong about the partnership, Jia Jianxu emphasized SAIC’s commitment, stating, “SAIC will undertake this task for you, and SAIC will absorb the cost at this price point, which represents a massive volume, the largest market segment.” He earnestly expressed his belief that by optimizing the costs of Huawei’s intelligent driving and intelligent cockpit systems, while SAIC managed other costs, they could carve out a distinct niche in the market.
